The Art of Fasting, and Why You Should Too
I had a yogi tea yesterday and the message was: Empty yourself and allow the universe to fill you up. This was absolutely so synchronistic since I was on my 4th day of my 5 day fast of the blessed herbs cleanse. I am physically emptying myself of literally what no longer serves me, to literally make space for the new. This is our main goal for all our new + full moons, which is when my cleanse began, New Moon in Virgo. On a side note, this new moon in virgo has been one of the most powerful ones we've ever had, with us not experiencing the same planets, in those same degrees since the 1700's.
I am not new to fasting, but I have never done a five day fast before. Coming into it I was very nervous, intimidated, excited, and totally ready. When it came down to it, I knew there was no way I was backing out. The first day was brutal with many cleansing reactions like headaches and vomiting, along with the morning of the second day as well. After the about 12pm of the second day, all through until now, early day 5 I've been great. The best and easiest fast/cleanse I've ever done. I can't figure out if its a} my mindset b} Blessed Herbs Cleanse and how they created the cleanse or c} I'm already fairly clean. I have a feeling it's a mix of all three of the above.
So many people and probably a few of you reading are thinking at least one of these thoughts:
~I could never do a fast I would pass out because of my hunger.
~Fasting is so unhealthy for you, your body needs food for you to survive, especially vegetarians.
~I don't need to cleanse or fast because my body isn't dirty.
~(and the one I hate the most): They just do it to lose weight.
I have thought all these thoughts before too, I only began fasting last year. I am so happy that I did because how I feel after is phenomenal. I finally got why people actually put themselves through that kind of "torture" as I used to think it was. But it really is anything but torture. What it is, is giving our poor body a break from all the hard work it is constantly doing for us. We use our digestive systems continuously, especially these days when we are constantly snacking and not giving ourselves enough time in between meals for our digestive system to process.
Basically fasting is a reset button. It is a way to rekindle that healthy gut fire that we need to maintain a digestive system that works for us, not against us. How many of you have digestive problems? Even just a few times a week? We all do once in a while, and of course there are a million reasons why that could be happening, but I am saying that fasting helps. Allowing our bodies to release what they need to release, to empty themselves. To heal our bodies.
Fasting is an act of Self Love, not of self hate as many believe. If we love ourselves enough to heal our bodies at all, I encourage you to try at least a 1 day fast, just to be open to it. The benefits are priceless.
Here are few scientifically proven benefits of fasting:
~Improves Insulin Sensitivity: Our bodies work and tolerate sugar carbohydrates better than if we didn't fast.
~Speeds up Metabolism: By giving our digestion a break we metabolize food better because our digestion system is working better than before the fast.

~Improves Hunger: There is a difference between what many of us think is hunger, than to what "true hunger" scientifically is, which ultimately takes at least 12 to 24 hours to feel. So when we fast we can reset our bodies back into its natural hunger cycles rather than the illusion that we get hungry every 2 hours.(Which is just a lack of nutrients from out last meal anyways.)
~Improves Eating Patterns: This really helps people who are prone to binge eating. While fasting we release many old eating patterns and tune into the natural cycles of our body.
~Increases Brain Function: Fasting has shown to improve brain function, because it boosts the production of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF.)

In nature when animals get sick they stop eating, and instead focus on resting. Our bodies are super powerful, so if we allow them to do their thing and for our little minds to get out of the way, we can perform miracles.
~Helps clear skin and Prevent Acne: Since the body is temporarily freed from focussing on digesting food, it can focus on other important functions such as purifying blood. Also not eating for a day will again reset our habitual ways, and connect us with our more intuitive way of eating that heals our skins.
~I fast for all those physical reasons, but many spiritual reasons too. The toxins we hold deep within us, are physically manifested emotional thought systems, habitual patterns we had growing up and our mindsets. So as we begin to release those deep inner plaques, we let go of old parts of ourselves that have held up space inside of us for far too long. So as we cleanse and fast, you can SURE expect for crazy feelings and emotions to come up. So much anger came up in the first and second day of mine, which were my most cleansing days. Just like in some yoga poses like pigeon for example, the yoga teacher will tell you that this pose will bring up anger, but as you go deeper into the pose, the release the anger. A fast is the exact same thing. I've heard a teacher say:
"The deeper you go, the more you release, and the more you release, the deeper you go."
**I tend to fast on energetic days like new and full moons, spring and fall equinoxes, eclipses, and solstices.
